See the internets about the whole freenode vs. libera drama

This is a bit a RFC, i would assume that we will move forward with only
one set of official IRC channels.
But maybe its too early to ask for RFC, iam not sure how much everyone
knows about this, and knowledge must come before making comments and decissions

Perhaps we should wait a month or two for the dust to settle. I presume
both channels have already been registered on libera.chat. I'm fine
with either network.

The channels on libera are registered
The channels on freenode where registered previously

One question that i think we should ask is what "buisness model"
these 2 have.
One seems to be a simple volunteer based "not for profit" the other
is said to be bought by some rich person. Does anyone know what the
buisness model behind that is ?
Normally when someone buys / invests in something he expects something
more valuable in return.
Is this some sort of "free" funded by advertisement model or if not then
how does it work? does anyone know ?

Thanks

Hi Michael,

only 2 **technical** comments below.

This should probably be spelled formerly and I'm not sure how correct
it is to say that the Libera IRC network was formerly freenode.

I can't currently think of something short, but to my understanding it
should read more like "founded by former freenode staff members" or
similar.

As long as the two channel links below (not seen in this patch) point
to freenode, I guess the average reader will land on freenode.

I'm in favour of switching over to Libera.chat.
Freenodes business model is more than questionable, and some recent
actions of the new staff are questionable at best.

The old Freenode staff have switched to Libera in their entirety, so it
seems only natural to follow along than to stay on a network that's
basically under the dictation of a millionaire that's apparently also
somehow some crown prince of Korea(?).

I wouldn't even add this section without removing the mention of
Freenode at the same time. Listing both is only going to cause confusion.

Agreed. Things seem to have come to a head within the last day:

Yes, should probably push this rather sooner than later.
Freenode has turned into an actively hostile environment and I'd like to
leave it rather sooner than later.

Note that if you want to keep the Freenode channel for the time being
too,
better not mention any others network channel in the topic, as it can
get
the channel forcibly taken over/closed like it happened to #xiph.

Citing from the #freenode topic:

Will push it tonight if Michael hasn't.

i didnt expect this to deteriorate so raptidly, it makes no real sense to
me. But given all this, its reasonable to point to libera so ill apply
this patch while removing freenode from our contacts page.
We can always change things if people want something different later

thanks
